Published by the Kyosai Memorial Museum. The Museum was opened in 1977, by Kyōsai’s granddaughter, Dr. Kawanabe Kusumi, in Saitama, Tokyo.
Kyōsai Gadan (or Gyosai Gadan) is a partly autobiographical work and partly a treatise on the history and technique of Japanese and Chinese painting. Much of what we know about Kyōsai's life comes from the pages of this book.
Box I / Volume I : Loose sheets. Reproductions of Kyosai's work. Each page is numbered (1 - 99). One side of the page contains the number (99 - 01 to 99 - 99) with title and description (in Japanese). The artwork is pictured on the other side of each sheet.
Box II / Volume II : Loose sheets and two volume of books. One volume is in Japanese, the other is translated in English. Reproductions of Kyosai's work on loose sheets. Each page is numbered (1 - 66). One side of the page contains the number (66 - 01 to 66 - 66) with title and description (in Japanese). The artwork is pictured on the other side of each sheet.
Format: The artwork on loose sheets and two volumes of books are housed in a boxed set.
Book condition: Used - Very Good. Age toning and light wear to paper.

Box condition: Good to Very Good. Corner wear and very small tear around some of the corners.
This 1983 reprint of the originally published work from 1887, contains woodcut illustrations (reproductions) and text in Japanese and English. Presented in a black and a chocolate brown box with color woodblock (reproduction) on front cover, the volumes are an attempt at art history, with examples of the styles of the various schools of painting in Japan, and an account of Kyosai's own practice and techniques.
